S&P 500 Sector Heatmap

A sector heatmap is a visual display showing how each of the 11 S&P 500 sectors is performing in real time. Colors indicate direction — blue for gaining, purple for declining. It lets you see at a glance which parts of the market are attracting money and which are selling off, without reading a single chart.

Blue means the sector is gaining today — the brighter the blue, the stronger the gain. Purple means the sector is declining. Dark or neutral means near flat. The intensity of the color reflects the size of the move, not just direction.

Sector rotation is when institutional money shifts between sectors based on the economic cycle — for example, rotating from Technology into Utilities ahead of a recession, or from Defensives into Financials when interest rates rise. Watching which sectors consistently turn blue or purple over several days reveals where smart money is moving before it shows up in individual stock prices.

Technology, Consumer Discretionary, and Financials tend to outperform in bull markets. These are cyclical sectors that benefit from economic expansion, rising earnings, and risk-on investor sentiment. Communication Services also tends to lead in growth-driven rallies.

Consumer Staples, Utilities, and Health Care are considered defensive sectors. They hold earnings more reliably during recessions because demand for food, electricity, and medicine stays relatively constant regardless of economic conditions.

The sector ETF (e.g., XLK) tracks the entire sector as a basket. The individual stocks shown (e.g., NVDA, AAPL, MSFT) are the largest holdings driving that ETF's performance. When NVDA rips 5% and XLK is only up 1.2%, it means the rest of the basket is lagging — useful information for traders.
